Hello, neighbors. On the speed issue, my view is that the problem is less the speed limit and more its enforcement. If I’m not mistaken, Rectortown, Maidstone, and Crenshaw roads are already posted as 25 mph within Rectortown village, but few cars/trucks keep to those limits. Has anyone ever spoken to VDOT about installing a few speed bumps? My guess is that if we had 6, with two positioned on each of those three streets, that would probably go very far to reduce speeds, and without much cost. I’m not certain of who the correct authorities are to decide such matters — VDOT? the County? — but if someone knows, I’m happy to volunteer to talk to the relevant governmental contact to find out about how speed bumps are proposed and decided upon.

OK
Let's do it.
Mike has my contact from the Bagel business....
I will let you know if Scott can meet with us.
I hate the speeders too!! - However, as Patty said up above, This is a matter for VDOT.
It is a very long and expensive process. I have not been involved in similar projects but know the guy who spearheaded similar but more elaborate traffic calming in Mburg, Aldie, Hillsborough etc. - Scott Kaspowitz. Perhaps we could make a small group and ask him for advice.
Just saw this discussion- I would absolutely be up for having speed bumps installed. I feel like I suggested it to VDOT at some point and then sent me in a round-about with people to contact that never led anywhere. I'm happy to try again but not sure where to start.
what was their explanation for not wanting the speed bumps? Is it a cost issue? Must there be some sort of traffic study first? I think we'd all agree that lower speed limits and a hope of greater enforcement won't work. But I would have thought that putting in a few bumps on the streets at the entries and exits of the the village (Rectortown, Crenshaw, Atoka and Maidstone) isn't a big ask, all of our neighbors would probably want it (or at least not object), and is consistent with what already exists in Upperville. Does anyone reading this have an interest and the time to speak with someone at VDOT (again) to find out their procedures for taking such a decision?
Daniel, I actually spoke with VDOT years ago about speeding on Crenshaw Rd. and they put the kibosh on speed bumps. I don't know what the criteria is for implementing them. Unfortunately lowering the speed limit and raising the fine doesn't work because there is little enforcement. Perhaps we could start out with asking for a traffic study
Speed bumps sound like a great idea! Agree traffic is moving a whole heck of a lot faster than the posted speed. Matt, thanks for building this virtual community!
The speeding along Atoka is also out of hand. A few speed bumps along Atoka would help too. I’m all for multiple speed bumps!
I also vote for speed bumps, pot holes, cameras, etc.
Im for anything. I've heard in the past there were concerns around noise from the bumps, similar concerns about a proposal of a 3-way stop sign at Maidstone/Rectortown. As the only person in town with a stop sign in his actual front yard, I'll tell you no stop/go is louder than a pickup accelerating at 40mph up the hill or 18 wheeler jake-braking at the last minute before the bridge.
